Workshop

About me and my work

based in chiemgau, my workshop specializes in crafting solid wood into shoji, fusuma, traditional japanese rooms, as well as high-quality custom furniture such as tables and beds.

beyond precise craftsmanship and aesthetically refined woodworking, i place great importance on a respectful approach to wood, a material that often takes decades or even centuries to grow. my focus is on sustainability, environmental responsibility, and the use of "healthy" materials—principles that have guided my work as a craftsman for nearly 30 years.

my interest in fine traditional craftsmanship led me from building medieval instruments to furniture making and, ultimately, to japanese woodworking techniques. through numerous stays in japan, i was able to continuously deepen my knowledge.

my journey into the world of shoji began with a customer’s request for a new built-in wardrobe. since there was no need to completely replace the existing ikea furniture, which was still functional, the obvious solution was to replace the original cabinet doors with shoji panels—an affordable, practical, and aesthetically pleasing result.

i am still fascinated by the versatility of these elements, and in the meantime, shoji and fusuma from my workshop have been installed in private homes, medical practices, and offices in:

Visit to the Shoji Workshop of Stephan Bauer

“They are both symbols and ambassadors of Japanese craftsmanship. Creative survivors in a land of constant architectural change: Shoji, Japanese sliding doors made of wood and paper. In Ellerding, Chiemgau, they are crafted by Stephan Bauer.” Lukas Drobny
