Guide to Mounting Shoji with Expert Tips
Standard Paper
A water-soluble paste is important so that the paper can be easily removed during repairs or replacement (moisten with a sponge, peel off)
- Place the smooth side of the paper (the visible side) facing outward
- Fix one side (with tape or clamps)
- Unroll the paper
- Align it straight
- Apply glue to all the slats (possibly moisten the glue area slightly before applying the paste)
- Work cleanly; excess paper can cause stains
- Glue the paper on (gently pulling), smooth from the inside to the outside
- Release the fixation and work on that part as well
- Trim excess paper with a cutter (paste still not completely dry)
- Let it dry
- Spray with water from the back (use a typical plastic spray bottle, not too wet, just "mist")
- Let it dry
- The paper will tighten like a drum skin
- For order numbers 10.05 and 10.06, smooth mounting is easier if the paper is lightly sprayed beforehand
Special Paper
Order numbers 10.30 to 10.39 are fixed with double-sided tape and not sprayed, as they do not tighten afterward; the appearance will remain as shown during mounting. Light tightening of order numbers 10.35, 10.38, and 10.39 through dampening is conditionally possible.
- Before processing, adjust the temperature to that of the intended installation location. Process at a slightly warmer temperature rather than too cold, as the mounting may otherwise "sag" too easily (expansion of the film)
- Apply tape to all the slats
- Smooth from the center to the outside
- Ensure that the paper does not get twisted diagonally
- The paper should not touch a crease (if present), as this will cause folds
