The seven lucky gods (shichi-fukujin), not easily assigned to a religious direction, are very popular in Japan as protectors and bringers of good fortune.
One of them is Hotei San, who in some contexts is also considered a manifestation of Buddha.
He is the friendly and cheerful god of contentment and abundance, with a big belly and a full sack. Sometimes little children (Karako) climb on his shoulders to play some tricks with the good-natured one.
