The seven gods of fortune (shichi-fukujin), not easily assigned to a religious direction, are very popular in Japan as protectors and bringers of luck.
One of them is Hotei san, who in some contexts is also considered a manifestation of Buddha.
He is the friendly and cheerful god of contentment and abundance, with a big belly and a full sack. Sometimes small children (Karako) climb onto his shoulders to play some pranks with the good-natured one.
